Introduction
To configure Visual Log's global options and get your website set up as you want it you need to choose the Change VLog Configuration option from the Admin Console. Note: If you are not a Master Administrator you will not be able access this feature!
You will be given the option to choose Detail Mode or Power Mode for changing the Configuration. This page deals only with Detail Mode which looks like the following (some fields have been obscured for security reasons):
Note: This Image was taken from an earlier version of Visual Log than the one publicly released and so some options are missing in the picture though they are described in the text below!
General Options
At the very top the Version Information will be displayed followed by the basic general site settings: Title, Description, Image Banner & Log URLs, Website Full URL and Webmaster Email Address all of which are self explanatory. Ensure that you set the Website Full URL correctly as this will be used by some parts of the system when sending out links in emails, this setting should have been set for you during the Setup process and should only need changing if you move the website to a new location.
Next you can select the Default Language and Default Colour Scheme that your website should be displayed in if the user has not specified any Preferences. Note that any user preferences and your own User Settings (see How To: User Options) will override these settings! If you want to force users to always use a specific colour scheme turn off the User can change Colour Scheme option. You can also force the site to always show in a fixed Language by turning off the User can change Language setting.
You can also select a Time Adjustment from Server Time if your web server is not in the same time zone as you wish your website to appear to be in, again you will have been prompted to set this during the initial Setup process and should rarely need to change it. Warning: Changing this Setting will likely cause you to be Logged out since the value of this setting is used as part of the User Authentication process. When this happens you simply need return to the Admin Console and log in again to continue working with your Website.
Following that you have the option of setting the Maintenance Mode Information Message, this is displayed to Users when you have engaged Maintenance Mode from the Setup Console. There is no real need to change this here as it can be set whenever you enter Maintenance Mode.
Next come the Mail settings, if you turn these on you must provide an Email SMTP Server, Email Sending Address as well as selecting an Email Component. If Visual Log doesn't support Email on your server the only Email Component selectable will be Disabled and you will not be able to use any Email features.
Then you can select whether to use Floating Page Titles on some pages where this is supported, see News for an example of this.
Blog Options
Next come all the Blog options where there are a lot of settings to choose from. First up is the choice whether to permit an RSS Feed of your Blog and if so how many Items per RSS Feed should be shown. Then you need to specify the page on which your Blog appears which should default to blogs.asp. If you wish you can choose to Use Default Filters in which case you can specify a Default Category and Default Blogger to filter entries by if the user has not specified a filter of their own. After that you can select the No. Entries per page followed by whether users are allowed to use Page Browsing to see all past entries.
After this come the settings for the accompanying features for Blogs, first choose whether Reader Comments are permitted and whether Poll Features are enabled. You can decide to limit Polls to 1 Poll per Entry and may change the Poll Bar Graphic used to display Graphs of Poll Results.
Then you can decide to Permit HTML in Comments which is not recommended but you may wish to do and if you have turned on Email Features you can opt to Send Email Alerts on Comments which will cause emails to be sent to the Blogger in question whenever they receive a comment on their Entries.
The final Blog related options are for Subscriptions, Subscriptions allow visitors to request email alerts whenever Blog entries are posted by a specific Blogger, in a specific Category or the Blog changes. First decide if you want Subscriptions Allowed, note that if Email features are disabled Subscriptions will be disabled regardless of this setting. Then choose the Max Subscription Level permitted for your Blog and whether Subscriptions require Email Confirmation, we recommend this last option is always on to stop people registering bogus email addresses and to prevent them registering other people for the email alerts who don't wish to receive them.
Content Management Options
Next there are the Content Management System (CMS) options. You must first select a CMS Homepage, this is the page that is shown to visitors if they have not selected a specific piece of Content to view through links or some other means. The page chosen can only be from the top level pages so if there is not an appropriate page then you should create a new one (see How To: Create Content). Next up there are 7 options relating to the sizes of Images and Icons used in some Navigation modules, if you don't set these options the images and icons used will be displayed at their actual size rather than at a consistent size you set! As well as the sizes you should set the default icon and image used for the Home link that always appears in every navigation module, though use of the icon and image will depend on the exact navigation module. You then have two options - Max Icons on CMS Icon Strip Navigation and Max Links on CMS Link Strip Navigation - which let you limit the number of Icons/Links that appear when using those Navigation Modules. The penultimate option is for CMS Navigation Links Order and determines the order in which links are displayed by all navigation modules. The very final option is Content Fields for Searching which determines which fields are used by the Content Search feature to find Content matching the given Search Words, an option with more fields will give a slower but more thorough search.
After these options you have some additional special Content Management Options relating to the Version History system. This is the system which maintains multiple versions of Pages and allows you to rollback to earlier versions if changes are made which you don't like and even restore Deleted Pages. The Update Frequency for Version History option controls the minimum time that must elapse between versions being saved for the History to be updated i.e. if this is set to Hourly and you created a new Page a version would be saved in the History. If you then noticed a spelling error and edited the page to correct this 5 minutes later then a further version wouldn't be saved, but if you didn't notice the error for 2 hours before correcting it a further version would be saved. Note that if you edit a page within this limit but the last editor wasn't you then a further version is always saved regardless. This setting does allow you to disable this feature entirely by selecting Never as the value for this setting.
The Record System Edits in Version History option controls whether automated edits made to Pages by Visual Log e.g. by the Link Integrity Checker should be recorded in the History.
Feature Options
These final options control if certain Features of Visual Log are used by different sections of the Software. Firstly you have three options which control whether Social Bookmarking Links should be shown with Blog Entries, CMS Content and All Pages respectively. Secondly you have two options which control whether Tagging will be used with Blog Entries and CMS Content respectively, note that regardless of Tagging settings the Tag Search feature will still find Content if it has been Tagged.
Updating the Configuration
When you've set all the options as desired click Update Configuration at the bottom of the page to proceed. You will then see a simple message telling you how many Configuration variables were updated, if any of the variables had invalid values set the update of that variable will fail and an appropriate error message will be seen. |
